Projects Underway 2019

36 VIEWS OF MT. FUJI

This project involves re-conceptualizing one of the most famous woodcut series in the history of art “A Series of Views of Mt. Fuji.”  Created by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849), the series includes 36 prints, among the most famous,  The Great Wave, ca. 1831, from “A Series of Views of Mt. Fuji.”

Each piece is built upon one of Hokusai’s prints with new layers set on them by me as an artist. I am intrigued with these works in creating a new perspective on each of Hokusai’s prints.

Like  A Series of Views of Mt. Fuji,”  the Fifty-three Stations of  the Tōkaid is a series of woodcut prints created by Utagawa Hiroshige, They depict  the Tōkaidō road, which linked the shōguns capital of Edo, to the imperial capital of Kyōto.  Printed in the mid-1830s, they rank close in importance in Japanese art to Hokusai’s prints.

As in the case with Hirishige’s work, I place new layers on the original Tokaido prints–hopefully bringing a new perspective to them. My current plant is to complete new collages based on all 53 Stations depicted in the Hirishige prints.

Reflections on Artists is a series of collages, sculptures and assemblages that focus on the lives and works of artists that are important to me. These pieces are not part of a systematic project, but have been developed as I have become interested in the life and work of specific artisst. Some pieces have been exhibited (Frida Kahlo’s Milagran Dress Form), but most have not. I hope to accumulate a critical mass of these pieces in the next couple of years in order to mount a large scale exhibit. Included below are completed works in this series:

Trump Reflections

Trump Reflections are a series of large format 24″ by 36″ collage paintings that chronicle the history of the Trump presidency.  At the present time, approximately twenty have been included. Many of these pieces have a three dimensional element built into them (“I Love a Parade!”) and I am also experimenting with video and sound files to go along with these pieces.  The creation of smaller collages are underway, as well as  a thematic series based on Lewis Carrol’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland  and Through the Looking Glass.

Maidenform Project

The Maidenform Project is a series of collages that draw on images advertising , comics and graphic art from the late 19th century to the early 1960s. Specifically, they address the social construction of the female form.

Much of what I am doing with these collages is intended by me as being playful. This is particularly the case with my taking the collages from of Max Ernst in his 1929 novel The Woman with 100 Heads and Une Semaine de Bonte the 1934  work Une Semaine de Bonte.

Included below are examples of some of these collages.
